As a result of the highly crowded roads in Cairo, the government decided to construct a number of underground car parks particularly in downtown area.
In 2000, Bauer Egypt participated in the construction of the first underground car park in El-Tahrir Square (Omar Makram Car Park). Bauer Egypt’s scope was to install a soft gel grout plug as a groundwater control system to allow for excavating the site in dry conditions.
In 2002, Bauer Egypt started the second underground car park in El-Tahrir Square(Tahrir Car Park I) Bauer Egypt’s scope was to install a portion of the diaphragm walls but the construction works were postponed from 2003 to 2010 due to financial reasons.
By the end of 2010, works were resumed and Bauer Egypt was awarded a new contract for the installation of the soft gel grout plug and groundwater control.
Scope of work:
- 1-Diaphragm Wall and Barrettes Works:
Construct inner and outer diaphragm walls and barrettes with thickness from 64 cm to 100 cm. Depth of walls is up to 35 meter. Total quantity of executed diaphragm wall is 36,883 square meter
- 2-Soft Gel Grout Plug Works
Grout a soft gel plug at a depth of 32 meter from the street level. Plug thickness varied from 3.80 to 4.20 meter. Grouted area is 17,160 square meter.
- 3-Groundwater Control System
Bauer Egypt was responsible for the supply and installation of complete groundwater control system comprising 35 deep wells, piping works and alarm system.
The controlling system is expected to run for about 16 months after completion of the soft gel grout plugs.
- 1-Diaphragm wall works and barrettes : 6 months
- 2-Grouting works : 7 months
- 3-Running of Dewatering works : 16 months
